![]() ![]() ![]() Which isn't to say that the consequences don't end being wonderful to watch unfolding in their epic, jaw-dropping splendor. The action and the stakes are fairly low key. This is also probably not a book for those who are only interested in the over-the-top space opera moments of the series. There were a few moments that felt a bit nostalgic, but I enjoyed them. I also loved the several scenes with Simon Illyan and Alys Vorpatril. It was a danger to let Miles take over the story, I'm sure, so one scene with him was all that could be allowed to happen, I think. In an attempt to keep from giving away too much, I will say that there is a scene with “The Gregor” and “The Coz” that was great. ![]() But then I went back and reread several of my favorite scenes. I have friends who are less dedicated readers and they wanted to know if this book was “worth reading.” I ended up reading it in one day and handing it off, wondering to myself if they would consider the book an essential one or skippable. I think there are books in the series that are less compelling than others (Cetaganda is one of my least favorite, but Memory-which ends Miles career as Admiral Naismith is one of my favorites). The Vorkosigan saga is probably my favorite series of all time. ![]()

But McFeely’s book is still a sound option to learn more about what Frederick Douglass did for the United States. I have read that Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom by David Blight is superb, so it may be that there are better options available. McFeely’s book does not have the same pace and enjoyment that some of my favorite biographers can muster, but his writing is still engaging and informative. The first portion of the book seemed repetitive to Douglass’s own recounting of his youth, but the rest of the book gave great insight to a complex and interesting man. After reading Grant by Jean Edward Smith, I learned about Douglass’s time representing the United States in Haiti, which led me to McFeely’s biography from 1991. ![]() After reading, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, I wanted to know more about Frederick Douglass. ![]() |
